Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is the only higher education institution in the world to carry the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and is recognised as one of South Africa’s most diverse universities.

Ampersand was commissioned to augment the keepsake publication Our Beating Heart, designed by Boomtown, which celebrates the contributions of NMMU staff and Nelson Mandela’s legacy. The studio integrated augmented reality (AR) features, including static imagery, video, animation, and audio overlays, extending the publication into an immersive, multi-sensory experience.
